A study on the human impacts in catchment forests in Morogoro region was carried out between 1987 and 1988. More than 50% of the reserves were visited and changes in forest cover brought by human activity were observed.Human activity in the form of pitsawing, collection of fuelwood and poles, encroachment and annual fires was observed in all reserves visited. It is concluded and recommended that the conservation and management functions of the forests must be maintained trough proper control of the activities carried out in these forests, boundary demarcation, law enforcement (patrolling and apprehending offenders) and through education and participation of the villagers surrounding the reserves. On the other hand agricultural crop production in villages must be integrated with afforestation activities (an agroforestry approach) in order to shift the dependence on forest products from the catchment forests.
