Climbers from tropical rain forest at the Albertine Rift, Western Uganda
1999
Eilu, G.
Four intact tropical forest sites at the Albertine Rift, Western Uganda (Bwindi, Kasyoha-Kitomi, Kibale and Budongo) have been studied for their flora of climbers: 56 families, 147 genera and 230 species were document. The five major families were Celastraceae (8.7%), Leguminosae (8.3%), rubiacea (7.85), Apocynaceae (6.5%) and Asclepiadaceae (5.7%); about 44.6% of the families were represented by only one species each. This included the first record of climbing Sapotaceae for East Africa (Chrysophyllum welwitschii (Eng.) Pierre ex Aubr. & Pellegr.). Of the climbers identified to species 11 are new to the flora of Uganda. With regard to climbers, the floras of Bwindi and Kasyoha are the most similar, followed by the floras of kibale and Budongo. The floristic similarities differ from what should be expected from the geographical distances between the forests.
