Wood as a fuel is an environmentally friendly energy resource. In the future, wood as a Latvian local fuel should be regarded as one of economically attractive energy resources owing to the dramatic decrease in the imported fossil fuel (oil and natural gas). At present, from the volume of wood felled in Latvia, 3.2-3.5 million m**3 is used per years as a fuel wood. From the volume of felled wood, spruce comprises ~ 25%. Wood is used for heating in the form of firewood, chips, briquettes, pellets, shavings, etc. at different moisture contents. The paper presents rated density, as well as the amounts of combustion mass and volume (lowest and highest) heat depending on the wood moisture content.
