The study is a comparative analysis of the vertical zones of vegetation and leaf size on Mt. Pulag with other Philippine mountains (Mt. Makiling, Mt. Mayon, Mt. Pangasugan, Mt. Apo and Mt. Akiki) and with other mountains in southeast and east Asia (mountains in New Guinea, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, China and Japan) along latitudinal gradients, using cluster analysis and principal component analysis. Results show the unique pattern of vegetation and leaf size zones on Mt. Pulag, different from the rest of the tropics. The mesophyllous broadleaved zone common in tropical mountains is absent in Mt. Pulag. The zonation is more or less similar to that of Chiang Mai highlands in Thailand which lie on almost similar latitude with Mt. Pulag, i.e., in the transition region always present peculiarities due to unstable environmental and geographical conditions. Consequently the phytogeographical position of Mt. Pulag as transition zone between the tropics and subtropics could be related to the stressful conditions promoting anomalies in the zonation. Results of this investigation could be used as basis for formulating long term ecosystem diversity and biodiversity conservation program
