Charting the future of cooperative banking
2004

This lecture charted the future of Philippine coop banks in the light of global trends in cooperative banking. Local information is drawn from the Management Development Program for Coopbanks being implemented at UPLB [University of the Philippines Los Baños], and supported by the Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC) since 1996. Overseas information is taken from English language websites. The Rabobanks of the Netherlands and the Desjardins of Canada turned out to be models of the future of cooperative banking. Both have marked their respective centennial and, through their successful history, offered useful lessons to the local coopbanks. Being close to members and performing well locally are the crucial test in coopbanking. The local coopbanks, being second-level organizations and being organized on a per province basis, have handicaps in this regard. Building up of equity can benefit from the Rabobank examples. A central entity is essential for fostering self-help and self-regulation, and one such entity must evolve from among the present coopbanks.
