The lands of rainfed areas are facing soil degradation problem dueto soil erosion and nutrient depletion. Significant proportion of rainwateris lost due to surface runoff. As a result crop yields are adverselyaffected. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect offertilization and water conservation on wheat crop production. Theexperiment was conducted at Fatehjang district Attock during 2002-03.Treatments comprised of control (C); water conservation practices (WC);Fertilization (F) and WC - F. The experimental year received 297 minrainfall which was 3% greater than average year. Fertilization plus waterconservation increased grain yield by 138%. Whereas, fertilization andwater conservation in isolation increased grain yield by 98 and 51%,respectively. It was observed that net return increased: by 65, 120 and165% under WC, F and WC + F treatments over C. The highest water useefficiency (11.35 kg ha-1 mm-1) was achieved under fertilization andwater conservation. It is concluded from the results that under nutrientdeficient soil simple water conservation practices can not significantlyincrease crop yields.
