The effect of salinity stress (0.3M NaCI) on the nitrogen metabolismof the cyanobacterium Anabaena subcylindrica (Borge) in absence orpresence of CaCI2 (0.03 or 0.05 M) was investigated. Salinity stressinduced reduction in protein content, nitrogenase activity, some aminoacids biosynthesis and nucleic acids content. On the other hand, salinitytreatment stimulated the protease activity and the production of prolineand cystine. Exogenous addition of CaCl2 to the culture medium alleviatedthe toxic action induced by salinity. The protein electrophoretic patternof the salinized A. subcylindrica showed disappearance of some proteinbands (76, 42 and 39 KDa) as compared with control, presence of CaCl2in the salinized culture caused the reappearance of these bands again. At the same time, 40 KDa protein appeared in salt and salt calciumtreated cells.
