The study was designed to evaluate the availability and adoption ofimproved wheat varieties in Kohat Tehsil during 2000. The main purposewas to examine the extent of availability and to identify the factors, which constrained the farmers adoption of improved wheat varieties. Thestudy was piloted in the five randomly selected villages. Samples of 50randomly selected respondents i.e. 10 from each randomly selected villagewere personally interviewed through a pre-tested questionnaire. Thestudy revealed that improved seed distributors in Kohat region wereADA, Cargil, Pioneer and some extension agents. About 75% of small wheatgrowers were unable to get seed from ADA due to long and hightransportation charges. On the other hand only 18% of the mediumfarmers obtained seed from other sources. Forty five percent of themedium farmers identified extension workers as their major source ofinformation regarding improved varieties of wheat, followed by 25% ofthe small farmers. Ninety two percent high yield, 62% better qualitychapatti, 64% less lodging, 64% greater germination and 68% earlymaturity of certified varieties were the reasons which attracted most ofthe farmers to use improved wheat varieties. Increase in the number ofsale points, subsidized price of improved wheat varieties and makingextension services more efficient are recommended to motivate farmers touse certified wheat seed.
