Different planting densities were examined to investigate theireffects on the performance of sugar beet at the experimental fields ofSugarcane Section, Agriculture Research Institute, Tandojam during 2003-2004. Sugar beet was cultivated in a four replicated with RandomizedComplete Block Design (RCBD) maintaining three plant populations i.e.67000, 83000 and 111000 plants ha-1. All growth, beet root yield andquality parameters were significantly influenced by plant, populations. When sugar beet crop was maintained at 83000 or 111000 plants ha-1showed significantly promising results regarding beet root yield andsugar content as compared to 67000 plants ha-1. Thus, 83000 plants ha-1was considered optimum planting density, where the crop showed higherlength (54.90 cm), with more number of leaves (18.99), better beet rootyield (84.357 t ha-1), higher brix (18.25 %) and recovery (10.24 %), whilevertical diameter (25.63 cm), horizontal diameter (16.17 m) and single beetroot weight (4.20 kg) were greater under lower plant population of 67000plants ha-1, mainly due to more space available for each plant to receivegreater quantities of moisture and nutrients, while higher yields under83000 plants ha-1 were associated with proper number of plants per unitarea. It was concluded that sugar beet cultivar Kaweterma may beplanted under plant population of 83000 plants ha-1 for obtainingmaximum performance under soil and climatic conditions of Tandojam.
