The studies included a population of 33 full English blood mares from the Rzeczna Horse Stud (Poland). For all the mares the inbreeding index and the basic reproductive index (foaling ability, fertility, pregnancy losses, sterility) were estimated. Genealogical lines and groups of mares which differed in their level of inbreeding were distinguished. A low level of genetic consolidation was analysed. An evaluation of reproduction results in the stud in recent years (1990-98) showed a negative phenomenon of pregnancy losses, which caused a considerably decreased fertility index. The studies also observed the occurrence of significant relationships between the origin of mares from definite breeding lines (including the varying level of inbreeding) and their reproduction results. The best indexes for foaling ability, fertility and percentage of pregnancy losses were for the mares which had a medium level of inbreedingthe greatest number of pregnancy losses were observed in the mares with no inbreeding. It is concluded then that a certain level of genetic consolidation expressed in the value of the inbreeding index can have a positive effect on pedigree results
