Investigation of energy-saving methods for drying of hops

The objective of the study to investigate qualitative traits of hops dried using divers fuels and different heating methods and to determine unit fuel consumption, fuel costs, and the consumption of thermal energy for the evaporation of 1 kg of water. The study was run under field and laboratory conditions. It included: analysis of the chemical composition of drying agent, analysis of hops quality, assessment of the performance specifications and economics of the driers heated with solid and gas fuels. In the case of gas fuel the assessment involved diaphragm heaters, plenum heaters and recirculation of the drying agent. Of the hop driers tested in the study, the drier equipped with an earth gas - fired plenum heater and with partially recirculated drying agent was found to shown the best performance
