The effect of sulphur fertilization and liming on the changes in the physio-chemical and chemical properties of the soil. Pt. 1. Sulphur in the soil

The effect of different rates of sulphur fertilizer application and liming on the formation of sulphate sulphur (S-SO4) and total sulphur in the soil was determined for 2 years in a pot experiment with rape, mustard, barley and oats. The experimental factors affected the changes in the content of S-SO4 and total S in the soil. Liming with calcium carbonate caused a distinct decrease in S-SO4 content in the soil. The effect of S fertilizer application on the formation of S-SO4 in the soil was related to the rate of fertilizer applied, liming rate and plant species tested. An increase in the content of sulfate ions was observed especially in the control treatment (no liming), and it was 1.5-2.5 times higher as compared with the amount found in the tests before the experiment. In the limed objects, especially on the level of Ca2, the application of sulphur caused an increase in sulphur content of the soil. The content of total sulphur in the soil was mainly related to S fertilizer application. A higher application rate of S-SO4 caused an increase in the total S content of the soil with oats.
