In 2000-02 an investigation was carried out on the effect of two forms of nitrogen (NO3- and NH4+) and Florovit on flower bud setting and beginning of the fruiting period in apple trees. Contrary to earlier reports, no differentiated effect of the two nitrogen forms could be assessed in flower bud setting, fruit bearing, or in the growth of trees. The content of nitrogen in leaves increased only in 2001 after the application of nitrogen in the form of NH4+. The two nitrogen forms effected a decrease in the content of potassium in leaves while the ammonium form also reduced the content of potassium in them. The ammonium form of nitrogen increased and the nitrate form decreased the pH of fruit juice and also increased the acidity of the juice
