Forage chicory: A valuable crop for Mediterranean environments
2004
Sulas, L.
Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) is a spontaneous species known since ancient times and used as a legume, coffee and medicinal herb, and only recently has it been used as a forage. A trial has started in Sardinia to assess quality and production levels of one local ecotype and of two commercial varieties of chicory subject to two different cutting frequencies. Preliminary results show that this species is highly productive and can be used in the dry environments of Sardinia. Because of these interesting characteristics, forage chicory is a promising crop to supplement and/or grow as an alternative to traditional forage crops. Long-term trials are necessary to test performance and to assess local germplasm.
