Productivity of five deciduous woody fodder species under three cutting heights in a Mediterranean environment
2004
Platis, P.D. | Papachristou, T.G.
Deciduous woody fodder species are suitable for Mediterranean semi-arid and sub-humid environments to provide forage for grazing animals during the critical summer period. Annual height and grazeable above-ground biomass of 5 species were studied regarding cutting height in a sub-humid environment with cold winters in central Macedonia, Greece. The following species were studied: Acer campestre L., Corylus avellana L., Gleditsia triacanthos L., Morus alba L. and Robinia pseudoacacia L. Plants were cut above ground at 10 cm (low cutting height), 20 cm (average cutting height) and 40 cm (high cutting height). The results indicate that the species studied should not be cut at less than 40 cm above-ground at the end of the growth period so that larger volumes of total grazeable biomass can be produced.
