This investigation was carried out to determine anther culturability in five crosses of nonscented and scented varieties - ADT36/Basmati 370, ADT37/Basmati 385, ADT43/Basmati 370, ASD16/Pusa Basmati 1, and IR50/Kasthuri. Low-temperature pretreatment had a remarkable influence on rice callus induction. Dark incubation of anthers showed a mean of 9.30% callusing ability compared with 4.59% under continuous illumination. Callus induction was high in the medium having the combination N6+2,4-D (2.5 mg L¯¹) + Kin (1 mg L¯¹). A higher frequency of callus induction was obtained 60 d after inoculation. In ASD 16/Pusa Basmati 1, the combination of 1 mg BAP L¯¹ with 0.1 mg IAA L¯¹ was more effective for plant regeneration, its frequency was 14.28%. In IR50 x Kasthuri, the same combination was more effective for plant regeneration, regeneration frequency was 14.16%. The mean percentage of callus induction and green plantlet regeneration was 28.75% and 28.78%, respectively, on sucrose medium, which was significantly higher than those on other media.
