Chemical weed control in irrigated common bean in Northern Sudan

Weeds constitute one of the major biotic constraints that limit production of common bean (phaseolus vulgaris L.) in Sudan. Field studies were conducted to determine the magnitude of yield losses due to weed competition and to evaluate the activity and selectivity of the herbicide Stomp alone at 0.5 kg a.i./fed and its tank-mixtures with other herbicides including Pursuit at 0.01 and 0.02 kg a.i./fed; Gesagard at 0.15 and 0.30 kg a.i/fed and Cadre at 0.01 and 0.02 kg a.i./fed in controlling weeds in common bean. Weeded and unweeded checks were used for comparison. Yield reduction, as a result of unrestricte weed growth, ranged from 53-74;. Stomp alone and its tank-mixtures with Pursuit and Gesagard were tolerated by the common bean and resulted in a significant increase in the final yiled of the crop. Mixture of Cadre with Stomp was found to be toxic to the crop and reduced plant population. All herbicide treatments used were found to be effective against a wide spectrum of weeds. However, in season 1999/2000, all herbicide treatments gave moderate to poor control of broad-leaved weeds due to the presence of Rhynchosia memnonia (Del) DC which tolerated all herbicides used. The highest grain Yield was achieved by Stomp combined with a single supportive hand weeding given 4 weeks after sowing or when tank-mixed with pursuit. The latter tretments gave comparable yields to the hand weeded control.The Pests and Diseases Committee recommended the following herbicides:1- stomp 500 EC at 1 L/fed 90.5 g a.i./fed) for pre emergence weed control
