The northern region (Northern and Nile States) is severely affected by desertification processes. Arid and hyper-arid environments that favor the formation of salt-affected soils dominate it. The vapor pressure is only 10.8 mb and the relative humidity is 20. The short-wave radiation is as high as 659-calorie cm-2 in May. Northerly winds prevail with a mean maximum speed of 17.6 km/hr. Desiccating winds at such speed must have serious impacts on soil and agriculture in the area. At present the desert represents 80 to 90 of the northern region and desertification processes are still active in the arid zones. To reflect on the status of research in the region, a short list of important research projects is presented. Previous and current research on desertification on the northern region is highlighted. The strategy of the plan of action and the priority research areas are outlined. The strategy of the plan of action and action for research in the region is to assess the magnitude of the problem, its causes and trend as well as seeking remedies and promote the process of combating desertification
