The breeds of farm animals are key biological resources necessary for development of animal breeding. Value of the most breeds is not very well known. If we compare the number of farm animals in Slovenia today and in the beginning of the past century, we had more farm animals in the past. Local breeds of farm animals were basic for the survival of farmers and are our cultural heritage. With involvement of Slovenia in international project about State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources, the country itself gets an overview about current situation and action plan for animal genetic resources (AnGR) conservation. The most important national priorities in conservation and utilization of farm animals genetic resources in Slovenia are: preventing overgrowing of agricultural land, strategy of sustainable food supply, environment- and animal-friendly breeding technologies, conservation of farm animals biodiversity, careful utilization of farm animal genetic resources, implementation of national policy in animal production and modernization of national infrastructure in animal production.
