Aflatoxin: Intoxication related to hepatocellular carcinoma in domestic fowls

Comparison of hepatic metabolism of aflatoxin B1(AFB1) between the domestic fowls showed that the species and age differences in hepatotoxic and hepatocarcinogenic effects of aflatoxin are related to combined activities of the microsomes to bind AFB1 to DNA and the cytosol to inhibit the microsome-mediated AFB1-DNA binding. The ducks are more susceptible to the toxic effects of aflatoxin than the chickens and quails, and that infant fowls are more susceptible than adult ones. However, conversion of AFB1 to the other less toxic metabolites does not contribute to the species difference in susceptibility.
