Effects of a range of plant density from 2.2-44.6 plants/square m on broad bean (Vicia faba L.) seed production and quality were investigated using a 4.5 deg radial trial design. A massive change in pod number per plant occurred. However seeds per plant, 100 seed weight and seed quality were all relatively unaffected by density. Plants grown at the 20 densities altered their structure, particularly branching and pod production, in response to changes in inter-plant and intra-plant competition. The implications of this are discussed in terms of yield per plant (maximum 119 g at 3.0 plants/square m) and yield per hectare (maximum 6.58 t/ha at 38 plants/square m). The predicted data from curve fitting suggest that growers should consider sowing rates to achieve populations of at least 45 plants/square m for improved seed yield.
