Influences of leaf area, leaf area index (LAI),and light interception on flowering of durian was investigated at durian orchards in Trat province, Thailand in 1999. The relationship between number of flowers per tree and total leaf area of durian trees with and r sup(2) of 0.681** compared to LAI which was r sup(2)=0.364**. There was no relationship between number of flowers per tree and light interception. The trees planted at 10*10 m spacing had a larger number of leaves, total leaf area, and LAI than those planted at 10*10 m spacing having controlled canopies as 7*7 m (height*width). The least number was observed on the hedgerow planted trees at 10*5 m spacing. Branches growing inside the canopy and received PPFD=90 micro mol/square m/s was unable to produce new leaves and would die eventually. No such branch was observed on the trees planted at 10*10 m spacing with controlled canopy compared to 33.3 and 14.6 percent observed on 10*10 m and hedgerow planted trees, respectively.
