Spirulina P-4-P grows well in Zarrouk's media containing 16.8 M NaHCO3. Increasing NaCl concentration from 0.25 to 0.75 M caused the decrease in growth rate, photosynthetic activity and protein content and also changed in fatty acid profile. The ability of Spirulina to grow in high salinity is the adaptation process. It was found that Spirulina P-4-P accumulated more low molecular weight carbohydrate at high NaCl concentration. This is a build up of internal osmotic osmotica in order to cope with the unbalanced osmotic pressure.
