Identification, conservation and use of wild plants from Portugal

Viewing the characterisation of Portuguese bioresources for conservation and utilisation status, we present the main vegetal taxa with actual or potential economical importance and a preliminary evaluation of its conservation status. There are reported according its value as sources of: human food, including beverages; food additives; animal food; pollen or nectar for honey production; materials for industries; fuels; vertebrate poisons; human and veterinarian medicine; food for useful invertebrates; non-vertebrate poisons; environmental uses. Also mentioned are the officially established protected areas (National Parks, Natural Reserves, Protected Landscape Areas and Classified Locals), the areas to include in the future National List of Protected Areas (Directive Habitats 92/43/CEE) and the areas presently under analysis. Likewise, the Governmental and Non-Governmental Portuguese organizations as well as Herbaria, Botanic Gardens etc., related with bioresource conservation and utilisation are report.
