Field experiment was conducted on Pakchong soil series (Reddish Brown Lateritic Group or Oxic Paleustult) at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center to compare responses to N fertilizer of some current popular maize cultivars to Suwan-3 maize in order that the equations for calculation N fertilizer rate from soil chemical analyses, which were provided for Suwan-3 maize, might be used for the current popular cultivars. Six maize cultivars, namely, V1, Suwan 3; V2, BIG 717; V3, G5460; V4, P3013; V5, PAC700; and V6, CP-DK888 were tested at five rates of N fertilizer, namely, 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg N/ha. From results the present experiment, conclusions were drawn as follows: 1) The maize cultivars required the same rates of N fertilizer for their maximum heights and for shortest tasseling and silking dates. 2) V2 and V4 did not show effect of N fertilization on number of ears per plant whereas V1, V3, and V5 began to reach the maximum figures at the rate of 50 kg N/ha and V6 attained its maximum figure at the rate higher than 200 kg N/ha. 3) V3 and V4 required similar rates of N fertilizer as V1 to attain maximum grain yields whereas V6 did at the rate of about one half of that for V1, V2 and V5 required more than twice of the rate for V1 to attain their maximum grain yields.
