During 1996-2003 period with the support from the Hybrid Maize breeding program of the MARD and MOET the research group at the department of Food crops carried out the selection of maize lines from different sources. After the seven years of work the group has 80 pure lines from the following sources: High-yielding lines among hybrid varieties. Local non-sticky and sticky varieties. Sweet corns among Korean sweet corns and hybrid sweet corns from maize companies. The research came to the following pionts: The early maturing lines having the growing duration of 115-120 days are suitable to breeding of short-duration hybrid varieties. - The varieties grew well with normal inflorescence differentiation and ear formation, many lines adopted well to the spring and autumn-winter conditions of the northern plains. Many line have good - looking plants and ear, resistance to logging, tolerance to main insects and diseases widely spread in the area. These are 5 promising lines. They are PR1002; PR1004; PR1025; III2 and III4. These lines have high yields, low selection index, and meet all requirements for parents lines in hybrid seed production. Regading the compatibility, VN1, VN2, AV10, AV20 have both high GCA and SCA. They can be used as tester and as maize germplasm for breeding a new hybrid maize varieties. Key words: Inbreed line, Pure line, maize germplasm; GCA (General Combining Ability); SCA (Specific Combining Ability).
