Forests are a valuable resource and their management and utilisation is a matter over which there will always be divergence among interest groups. Consequently, there will always be political involvement. We as foresters will not only have to live with this but should learn to embrace this fact and to use it to the advantage of the sector. An area in which we shall need to improve rapidly is how to present information about the sector so as to attract the support of politicians both directly and through influence on the voting public. It is a lesson which environmental pressure groups in industrialised countries have learned well and whose benefits they are reaping.
