The indigenous Fruit Tree (ITF) domestication programme is supported by Germany Technical Cooperation(GTZ) through the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry ( ICRAF). The major objective of the domestication programme is to develop a comprehensive breeding programme for the indigenous fruit tree species which involves provenance evaluation, selection of good trees in terms of fruit quality and the development of propagation and processing technologies. The overall goal of the programme is to ensure sustained production of fruits from indigenous tree species by local communities. The domestication programme concentrates on the fruits of the miombo eco-zone, because this is a unique ecosystem of woodland vegetation spreading from East Africa in Tanzania to Southern Africa in South Africa.
