The contry possesses a unique biodiversity which is characterised by a very high level of endemism. The Tree Seed Centre's work on the collection, propagation, processing and storage of tree seed is of vital importance for the survival of many of the remaining indigenous species. Moreover, the supply of genetically superior seed in the reafforestation programmes of the Forestry Service will boost productivity in planted forests, thereby enhancing the economic, ecological and social roles of the plantations.
