Forestry research and its contribution to improving commercial forestry practices in Zimbabwe
1999
Shumba, E.M. | Nyoka, I.B. | Mabvurira, D.
The role of exotic plantations in Zimbabwe's forest products sector is emphasised.Forest reaesarch has been and will continue to be essential to sustaining and increasing the output from exotics. Increasing the productivity of existing species, especially through breeding, is important but must be tempered by considerations of the risks of narrowing the geneticbase too far. Other contributions of research which are becoming more important include:site classification, nutition and management information handling. The real value of funding for research has fallen in recent years;a plea is made for continued strong government support for forest research.
