Dynamics and tendencies of freshwater fish production in Bulgaria

The species structure of the average number of about 90% of the annual production of fish in fishery farms in Bulgaria is being formed by carp, trout and big-carp. Relying on updated information their average wholesale price for 2003-2004 amounts to 4.59-4.45 BGN/kg or 2.34-2.77 US$/kg, which is considerably higher than the average international price for production of such a type. Currently the consumption of fish and fish products in Bulgaria is approximately 4.3 kg/person, being at much lower level compared to that in Europe and worldwide. The ratio is 1:5 for sea species, including also frozen species in relation to freshwater ones.
