Zootechnical and economical characteristics of the sheep production systems in the valley area of the Plovdiv district

29 sheep farms from the valley area of the Plovdiv were analysed. They were grouped into three types according to the production system - with low, medium and high inputs. 26 zootechnical anf 26 economical indexes were calculated and on their basis the zootechnical and economical characteristics of the studied systems was made. The average number of ewes in the low input systems was 27.68, in the medium - 107.57 and in the high - 425.84. The average productivity per ewe was determined for the systems of low, medium and high input: milk yield 106.57 l, 116. 10 l, and 112.16 l, number of lambs sold per ewe - 0.78, 0.90 and 0.94, live weight of the lambs sold - 19,31 kg, 18.24 kg and 18.18 kg, prolificacy - 1.34%, 1.31% and 1.29%. The determined structure of the income defined the studied sheep production systems as ones for milk and meat. The sheep producers form the valley area of the Plovdiv. District could be classified as producers of sheep m ilk and light lambs. Despite small differences in the income (155.41 BGN, 170.29 BGN and 168.55 BGN) and in the expenses (86.32 BGN, 100. 82 BGN and 97.80 BGN) per ewe for the systems of low, medium and high inputs, the gross margin per ewe was approximately 70 BGN for the 3 systems.
