Adaptability and performance of selected African and Austrlian multipurpose trees under semi-arid conditions in Zimbabwe
1998
Maruzane, D. | Gumbie, C.
Periodic droughts, grazing requirements, household energy needs and land clearance for agriculture purposes together with the low average per capita income in semi-arid regions has, over the years resulted in excessive pressure being applied on woodlands. In 1981 after realising the existence of such pressure the Forestry Commission established Chesa Forest Research Station for the purposes of conducting research into dry zone afforestation, agro-forestry and silvo-pasture. The main objective was to provide inhabitants of semi-arid regions with research backup on tree planting for fuelwood, poles and fodder production. This was done through systematic testing under semi-arid conditions of tree species with desirable characteristics.
