Aspects of natural forests in Mozambique
1993
Bila, A. D.
This paper presents some aspects of the natural forests of Mozambique, namely the principal forest formations, their distribution, degradation, utilization, management and research on some of their species. The natural forests occupy about 71% of the land area of Mozambique; as such they have an important role to play in the socio-economic development of the country. The principal forest formation for productive purposes is the open forest {woodland) which is dominated by species of Brachystegia and Julbenardia. It has a low productivity as well as a limited proportion of commercially valuable tree species and big trees. The principal use of harvested wood is for energy in the form of firewood and charcoal. The principal causes of forest degradation, in a decreasing order, are agriculture, extraction of fuelwood and uncontrolled fires. The natural forests lack proper management and studies on their tree species are very limited.
