Strategies for conservation of forest genetic resources in the SADCC region

Conservation in situ is the ideal strategy for conserving threatened forest genetic resources in the SADCC region. Targeted tree species or populations should be protected in Strict Natural Reserves or National Parks. For a species that is widely distributed through a range of environments, populations should be protected in a number of reserves. These should be located at the centre of distribution of the species and areas of extreme habitats in order to ensure an adequate sampling of genetic diversity. The appropriate strategy for conserving tree species or populations of proven economic value which are facing serious destruction from social and economic pressures in their natural habitats is ex-situ conservation. This should involve collecting and storing seed or vegetative material in gene banks, carrying out research to determine methods of propagation and establishing field gene banks.
