Within the scope of an ethological assessment of turkeys_ acceptance of an alternative housing system, measurements of air quality - considered to be a decisive factor in human and animal well-being and health _ were carried out. At a central location in the housing system, CO2, NH3 and dust concentrations were monitored online. Endotoxin content was measured in dust sam-ples taken from a filter or from the air via a cascade impactor. The investigations were carried out in both winter and summer to identify possible seasonal effects. Typical variations emerged for all components, with higher concentrations in winter than in summer. The measured concentrations showed that no significant impairment of the farmer_s health or well-being is to be expected from working in the turkey housing systemhowever, the results do not permit any conclusions to be drawn with regard to individual reactions to the air in the stall due e.g. to endotoxin content.
