The ecological compensation areas (ECA) aim to support the biological diversity. This objective is evaluated by the study of spiders, carabids, butterflies, plants and birds. Except for hedgerows and orchards, the ECA rarely contain more species than the cultivated areas. They contribute, however, to the regional diversity, as they are composed of specific assemblages, distinct from those of cultivated areas. Moreover, they shelter more specific, characteristic and rare species. After seven years, spiders and carabids show a weak but positive change in ECA, while no big differences could be demonstrated for the flora and the butterflies. The most valuable types of ECA are hedgerows, whose establishment and maintenance should be reinforced, and traditional orchards, which should be associated with other ECA. Choosing better locations according to the local context and the nature of the surrounding environment could increase the efficiency of extensive meadows.
