The changes in carabid beetle and spider assemblages from 1994 to 2001 are analysed in five habitats. Three of them are ecological compensation areas (ECA). The characteristic development of some species is described. The turnover of the species and a factorial analysis show significant modifications of the communities in the ECA. The carabid beetles and the spiders react differently to changes of vegetation structure and microclimate generated by the evolution of the botanical composition of the ECA. The way the new areas are colonized play an important part. These surfaces gained at the expense of field crops allow to substantially increase the number of species on the whole site.
