Yield and evapotranspiration of forage sorghum depending on preirrigation soil moisture

A two-year study on the effect of irrigation on the green forage yield and evapotranspiration of forage sorghum has been conducted at Rimski Sancevi Experiment Field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia (Serbia and Montenegro) on the calcareous chernozem soil on the loess terrace. The study included irrigation variants with pre-irrigation soil moistures of 60-65, 70-75 and 75-80% of field water capacity (FWC) and the non-irrigated control. The effect of irrigation on forage sorghum yield was statistically significant. Evapotranspiration of forage sorghum was determined on the basis of a balancing of water consumption from the soil reserve (2 m depth), the rainfall during growing period and irrigation requirement. On the results obtained it can be concluded that the forage sorghum water requirement is at the level of 600 mm in the climatic conditions of the Vojvodina Province, Serbia (Serbia and Montenegro).
