Occurrence of major pests on field crops in Vojvodina [Serbia (Serbia and Montenegro)] in 2004 and forecasts for 2005

The forecasting of occurrence of major field crops pests in the Vojvodina Province (Serbia and Montenegro) has been regularly reported since 1978. By inspection of soil samples from fields where cereals and sugar beet were grown in 2004, the following average number/square meter was recorded: 3.1 wireworms (Elateridae), 0.4 whitegrubs (Scarabaeidae), 0.13 caterpillars of Scotia spp., 0.0 adults of Zabrus tenebrioides, 1.0 adults of Bothynoderes punctiventris and 0.2 chrysalides of Mamestra spp. In late autumn, 41.2 adults/square meter of Senn pest (Eurygaster and Aelia), was found on overwintering sites. The number and injury of Cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) significantly decreased in 2004. The number and injuries of ECB (Ostrinia nubilalis) were similar or slightly higher to previous year, as well as the population density of the WCR (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera).
