Noted in the present paper are the most important harmful species found in alfalfa and clover seed crops in Serbia and Montenegro. Their distribution, incidence and harmfulness are discussed. The most effective crop protection measures against these pests are pointed out as well. Particularly important in economic terms is the pest species Contarinia medicaginis, which may reduce seed yield of alfalfa and clover by as much as 77%. Other notable pests of these species include Tychius flavus, Apion apricans, Apion aestivum, Adelphocoris lineolatus, Lygus spp., Bruchophagus roddi and Bruchophagus gubbus. Contributing to the reduction of these insect populations and the damage they cause are spacial isolation, crop rotation, broadcast sowing and weed removal. Based on a number of years of study and practical experience, split application of insecticides is the recommended way of chemically controlling seed pests.
