The application of vigour tests in quality assessment of maize (Zea mays L.) seed

The application of vigour tests in hybrid maize seed quality assessment was observed. The objective of the present study was to analyse if vigour tests, cold tests and accelerated ageing test, can provide a more precise estimation of a seed responses to stress conditions during the storage and field emergence than the stadard germination test. Obtained results show that identification i.e. ranking of seed lots over their vigour at the moment when high and uniform quality of all seed lots is determined by the standard germination test is the greatest contribution of vigour tests. Reduction in germination of tested seed lots was registered after the two-year storage in a warehouse, while vigour was reduced after one year. Storage in the controlled environment provided the maintenance of germination and vigour at the initial level during the tested period. A necessity for strict control of the testing conditions during seed vigour determination was observed in the course of the study. This study proved that vigour tests had a very important role in seed quality control, and therefore they should be improved and continually applied. Additional information on seed vigour is important not only for making strategic decisions by a seed company, but it is also useful for seed buyers.
