Investigation of macrozoobenthos in the Gruza water reservoir confirmed its pronounced eutrophication, which is the main reason for the relatively poor ecological conditions for development of this community. Thirty-two taxa were recorded in the water reservoir. Oligochaeta and Chironomidae were the dominant groups. In regard to their ecological characteristics, all of the recorded taxa belong to the category of euryvalent forms resistant to low oxygen concentrations and toxic products formed by the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter, which are often present in the lake. Apart from poor ecological conditions, the dense concentration of benthophagic fish and use of copper sulfate to suppress excessive multiplication of blue-green algae also contribute to the relatively low diversity, productivity, and biomass of the macroinvertebrate fauna in the lake. Our investigations showed that this substance acts especially toxically on species of the group Mollusca, but also accumulates in the form of copper in sludge and through the food chain enters into the tissues of other hydrobionts, especially fish.
