Results of microbiological research and investigations of zooplankton in the Gruza water reservoir enabled us to determine the quality of its water. Saprobiological and biochemical methods were used for this purpose, together with a complex method, namely determination of the water quality index (WQI). Saprobity analysis showed water of the Gruza water reservoir to be for the most within the limits of beta-mesosaprobity. Use of the index of phosphatase activity (IPA) indicated that the majority of samples (as many as 76.3%) are in the category of moderately to highly polluted water. Results obtained using the WQI method showed water of the reservoir to be predominantly within the limits of class 2 water, occasionally passing over into class 3. However, it should be noted that due to the lack of some parameters, use of the WQI method was not entirely valid. All of the employed methods indicated that the quality of water in the Gruza water reservoir is unsatisfactory and that various measures are needed to improve it.
