The fertility of five alfalfa genotypes in random pollination (polycross) conditions was studied. The following traits were investigated: pollen fertility (%), number of unfertilized ova per ovary, inflorescence number per stem, pod number per inflorescence, grain number per pod, and grain number per inflorescence. The genotypes studied were found to have had high pollen fertility (63.8-81.3%), and an average of 9.59 ova per ovary, so these two traits were not limiting factors in the production of seed. The genotypes differed significantly in inflorescence number per stem, pod number per inflorescence, and grain number per pod. Highly significant correlations were found between pollen fertility and inflorescence number per stem (r=0.60) as well as between ova number per ovary and inflorescence number per stem (r=0.71). The correlation between inflorescence number per stem and grain number per pod was not significant (r=0.16).
