Four genetically diverse genotypes of six-rowed and two-rowed barley (HVW-247, Partizan, NS-293 and KG-15) have been selected for diallel crossing in order to study the mode of inheritance, gene effect, combining ability and the variance components for the number of spikelets per spike and weight of kernels per spike in F1 generation. The results obtained showed that the parents, used in the crosses, significantly differed in the studied characters. The mode of inheritance for the number of spikelets per spike and weight of kernels per spike was different (partial dominant, dominant), depending on the cross combination. The components of genetic variance and average degree of dominance indicated partial dominance in the inheritance of these traits. The highest positive general combining ability (GCA) values for number of spikelets per spike was shown by NS-293, that for weight of kernels per spike by Partizan. The crosses Partizan x NS-293 and HVW-247 x Partizan were the combinations with the highest positive specific combining ability (SCA) values, so they may provide potential breeding material.
