The objective of this study was to determine the effect of weather conditions, stage of plant growth and lower rates of nitrogen fertilization on forage yield and its quality. The results of a two-year experiment showed that all three examined factors had a significant influence on both, yield and forage quality. Dry matter yield ranged from 2.55 to 11.3 t/ha. Crude protein content and protein yield were more influenced by stage of plant growth and weather conditions than by nitrogen (N) application. Significantly more forage of a better quality could be obtained by cutting at the heading stage of plant growth and application of 30 to 60 kg of N/ha.
