Energy production facility with combustion of large soya bean straw bales and thermal power of 2 MW

In one of the largest agricultural companies in Serbia there are over 2000 ha of soya plantations, and there are 4000 t/year of baled soya straw available, none of which being used for energy purposes. At the same time, there is a need in the company for heating of greenhouses, with 5 ha in area, and office buildings. Therefore, efforts have been made in the Laboratory for Thermal Engineering and Energy of the Institute of Nuclear Sciences Vinca, Belgrade, to develop a technology for utilizing large baled biomass for energy production. As a result, a demo energy production facility - furnace has been developed, for combustion of large soya straw rolled bales, with over 1.20 m in diameter. The furnace was built and tests were conducted in order to examine the quality of combustion and to assess the possibilities for designing a soya straw-fired hot water boiler of similar characteristics. Since the results of these tests, presented in the paper, have proved to be very satisfactory, it has been concluded that the designed facility represents a good basis for future development of energy production utilities of this kind.
