Historical development of safe disposal of corpses of dead animals in Serbia

The paper presents procedures with corpses of dead animals since the Serbs populated the Balcans to the present. Over the past period, and nowadays, the idea of necessity of safe disposal of corpses of dead animals prevealed. The the beginning, and in some cases today, the corpses of dead animals were burried. Thus, the animal cemeteries (carrionpits) were made. Other methods of safe disposal of animal corpses were also developed, like burning and using chemicals. In the recent times, disposal corpses of dead animals is done using heat destruction, processing into feedstufs and lubricants. Having in mind that safe disposal of corpses of dead animals is also one of measures to prevent spreading of many contagious disease, the modalities of use are becoming more and more important. Their choice has an effect on environmental protection and human and animal health.
