The paper documents the changes of humus forms and their chemistry in different parts of the natural forest in Zakova hora National Nature Reserve, Czech Republic. The amount and composition of humus and basic pedochemical characteristics of holorganic and upper mineral horizons were established. The results document changes in the character of humus forms as a consequence of tree species changes (especially Fagus sylvatica vs. Picea abies) and changes in tree age structure. Spruce monocultures had undesirable effects on soil chemistry because of humus accumulation on soil surface and soil acidification. On the contrary, beech and high spatial diversity had ameliorating effect.
